Spotify are the ultimate evil
i was interested in putting an album out there. i found tunecore. in the beginning it costed 30$, by the time id decided (and completed a greatest hits) it was 50$. that is per album, per month. 99.99% of musicians (or even more) make NEGATIVE on streaming online. everyone should just migrate to bandcamp and patreon. spotify is the ultimate evil though. unless you break 1000 listens PER SONG, you get nothing. because thats the average listening amount for a mildly popular (that is, less than 1%) artist.
some years later i gave up, as i was making 1 cent per month. never managed to get out of the money i earned there, about 30$ i think. in latin america you got like 20-50x more per stream, i got 1 remix song with like 1300 streams. i got 1 download ever, as well. but then i looked up my most wellmade album online. negative feedback loop. its still getting streams, on boomplay in nigeria of all places, 2.2 million, last i checked. like mentioned, i tried contacting tunecore over it, they replied with an article about "fake listens, what can we do about it?". fake listens are the EMBODIMENT of soundcloud, anyone who creates an account gets swarmed with bots. its so sad.
and the listens big artists get are just an approximation, i mean with 100s even 1000s of services, and artists getting billions of views on each one? it doesnt add up. im sure they got a deal for like "get 50-100x more views than real". btw if 10k people watch a 10 second short 10k times, thats 100 million views, takes a total of 27 minutes. so who knows.
