Quake revolutionized and ruined gaming
well ive mostly only played the final fantasy diablo quake ultima series since the 80s. actually stopped gaming after diablo II for 15 whole years. lived life. turned into a parent, turned healthy. got outgoing. still as creative as ever though. then bella left me for her ex after our second baby was born. so started smoking and got into runescape. anyway, have been using PC exclusively since 1994. id software really ruined gaming as a whole and also the gaming culture. quake was the first and only good FPS ever made, people were playing it at work all over the world. some might not know by now, but valves first title was halflife, which was based on the quake I and II engine. since 1999 all games had to be FPS online not finished when released (id invented "point releases" with quake II, just a rebranding of the term "patch updates", it didnt work at all on the web upon release and had no multiplayer levels) and also "realistic", counterstrike was the last nail in the coffin. but quake was also realistic (sorta, it was supposed to be an RPG) and the first game really that was custom made to allow easy modding, adding levels and different rulesets. people even made movies with it. it also started the speedrunning idea, with "rocket launching". its actually open source now. id also invented "skins" for player models. quake I and II had 100s even 1000s of mods, many many different (news) sites communities forums related to it. there was even one called gameart which is gone on the internet nowadays. dhabih eng got hired by valve from the fanart he made for quake. and the guy who made the dire protofiend skin got hired to develop daikatana, and we all know what happened to that, it was john romeros pet project, an old truant who got fired from id.
